water damage rosevilleMemorial Day is not only a day off of work, school, or other obligations, it is a time to reflect on the brave men and women who lost their lives fighting for their country. Many people take advantage of this holiday to travel, whether it is just for Monday, or the entire three day weekend. If you are planning on going away during this time, don’t leave your home to disaster. Prepare your home for the potential disasters that could occur, better protecting your home while you are away.

Burglary

An intentional burglarization of your house is one of the most common disasters that occur when you are away. Don’t let yourself be a victim in this way, take these steps necessary to protect your home:

  • Don’t announce you are leaving via social media. You never know who you can trust, even on your list of friends. Don’t make public announcements on where you are going and how long you will be gone.

  • Make things look as though you are still at home. This includes using a timer to turn on lights to give the appearance you haven’t left. Leave the curtains and blinds of your home in the same position you usually do.

  • Ensure all the doors of your home have been locked.

  • Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on things, watching for suspicious activity.

All this can be done in your home to protect against burglars. Unfortunately, this isn’t the only problem that has potential to harm your home and belongings while you are away.

Home Disasters

There are plenty of things that can happen within your home without the influence of others that will lead to disaster. Examine these things before leaving your home for an extended period of time to prevent problems:

  • Make sure all hoses and outside water has been turned off when you leave. Run your sprinklers just before leaving so you can go through and check for any leaking or broken issues. There is nothing worse than coming home to find a flooded basement.

  • Unplug all the electronics in your home that you can including the computer, microwave, and more. Not only will this save you on your electric bill, it will lessen the chance of fire hazards in the home.

  • To also prevent fires, make sure to go through your home and look for any candles that have been left lit. Effectively extinguish all of these fires before leaving your home.

Have a fun and safe Memorial Day, enjoying the time off while also remembering those brave men and women who fought for our country. If you do go out of town, take every precaution necessary to protect your home. This will bring you the best peace of mind, ensuring your belongings will remain safe.
